Businesses across New Mexico embraced holiday shoppers during Small Business Saturday. There are over 100,000 small businesses in New Mexico, accounting for more than 50% of New Mexico’s employment in 2020. Debra Adler and her daughter have owned Retail Therapy Abq for the past nine years in Nob Hill. “We wanted to open a store that was different, that had different things that weren’t offered in Albuquerque,” Adler said. “Everything we have here is either funny, well-made, beautiful clothes, clothes from New Mexico, and also things that are, like I said, very positive.” Adler said Saturday was a good day of work for them. “Some people only come one time of the year, and they come on Saturday,” Adler said. “It’s really important for Albuquerque to support small and local businesses, because if not, they won’t exist.” Peach Ellis, assistant manager of Michael Thomas Coffee Roaster, agreed, offering things people might not find at a chain. “I think we have over 40 origins and different things. We have quite a lot of coffee,” Ellis said. “We also have home brewing kits that have everything you need, like scales, pitchers and everything.” “Small Business Saturday is the start of the holiday season,” Adler said. “Usually within the next two weeks, it starts to get really, really crazy. We have people outside the door standing and waiting.”
